Topics Covered:
  • Preparing 3D models for import into Adobe CS3
  • Introduction to CS3 3D tools and viewing options
  • Enhancing the imported model using CS3 image tools

This series of videos is designed to help you tap the new 3D capabilities of Photoshop CS3 Extended, even if you have never used 3D before. Luxology is in a unique position to offer these videos as we worked closely with Adobe during the development of CS3, supplying technology and content to Adobe Systems. We are excited with the results and have built this video series to help introduce people to what you can now do in Photoshop.

The 3D capabilities of Photoshop are simple but useful. It is useful to have an understanding of what types of models CS3 works best with and how to prepare models in modo (or other 3D application) for successful importation and manipulation in Photoshop. Once the 3D object is loaded and rasterized (rendered) in Photoshop, what next? These and other topics are addressed in this new video series from Luxology. The videos are narrated in English and are appropriate for designers and artists at any technical skill level (basic Photoshop familiarity is useful).

Note: These tutorials are delivered online in 1280 x 719 Quicktime (H.264) format and are available for download through your Registered Products page after purchase.

Video 01 - Preparing, Importing and Texturing
(Total Run Time: 15m 54s)

This video is the first part of a series of videos on the new 3D capabilities of Photoshop CS3® Extended. It demonstrates how you can take models from a 3D application and easily incorporate them into a piece of artwork.

Key tips are provided on how to prepare 3D models for import into CS3 using a standard 3D application (modo is used in this tutorial but the techniques are transferable to other products such as 3ds Max or Maya).

During the video we take a standard 3D model and use a variety of techniques to make an OBJ format file that is CS3 compliant, paying special attention to how surfaces are handled in CS3. Then we import the model as a 3D Layer in Photoshop, introduce some of CS3 Extended’s 3D tools, edit an image map applied to the 3D object in CS3 and use a variety of common Photoshop techniques to create a piece of enhanced 2D illustration artwork. A sample 3D file with UV’s and its associated textures are included, as well as final artwork.
